How Folksam’s riding-horse insurance works in practice: the difference between Bas and Stor, what A1 and A6 veterinary cover mean, A1/A2 life, excess and what is included – with links to Folksam’s site and policy wording.
Folksam’s riding-horse insurance is built as two packages – Bas and Stor – and you choose the veterinary level (A1 or A6) and the life cover yourself. We walk through the product from Folksam’s own information, so you can see what actually differs between the levels before you compare with other insurers.
Start here if you want the primary source straight away. The wording is what applies at a claim – this guide is a plain-language overview.
Folksam splits riding-horse insurance into two scopes. The difference is mainly how much is included in the veterinary cover – not whether the horse is “too good” or “too ordinary” for one package or the other.
| Part | Ridhäst Bas | Ridhäst Stor |
|---|---|---|
| Veterinary cover | Your choice: A1 or A6 (at least one of life/veterinary cover must be selected) | Choose A1 or A6 |
| Veterinary sum insured | 40 000 / 80 000 / 125 000 kr | 40 000 / 80 000 / 125 000 kr |
| Extended veterinary cover | No | Yes – rehab, prescription medicine, therapeutic shoeing, vet travel, animal ambulance, laser treatment of wounds and more, within the sum insured |
| Extra payout for abdominal surgery | No | Yes – up to a further 50 000 kr/year once the veterinary maximum has been reached |
| Emergency slaughter / disposal | No (according to the package description) | Up to 10 000 kr for a payable injury/illness |
| Life cover A1 | Optional | Optional |
| Limited life A2 | Optional | Optional |
| Djurens vårdguide | Included | Included |
| Personal accident cover | Included | Included |
Both A1 and A6 can be taken out with 40 000, 80 000 or 125 000 kronor as an annual sum. The difference sits in which diagnoses and injuries are paid for – not in the sum steps.
Folksam’s more comprehensive veterinary insurance. It pays for examination, treatment and care carried out by a vet after an accident or illness, up to the chosen sum. This is the level people usually mean when they talk about “full” veterinary cover at Folksam.
A narrower veterinary policy that covers many common injuries and illnesses – but not, for example, lameness and wear-and-tear injuries. The full diagnosis list is in the wording. A6 can suit you if you want a lower premium and knowingly accept the gaps, especially around lameness.
Folksam’s most comprehensive life cover for a horse. The sum can be paid if the horse dies, goes missing or is stolen. It also applies if the horse becomes so ill or injured that it loses its future usefulness, or has to be euthanised. On loss of use there is the option of a partial payout.
A narrower life cover. A payout can be made if the horse dies, goes missing/is stolen in Sweden, has to be euthanised on veterinary advice for a severe illness, or is so badly injured in an accident that continued treatment will not allow it to live on. There are clear exclusions – including lameness, developmental disorders, osteochondrosis, chronic respiratory disease and injuries to tendons, the suspensory ligament and other ligaments. The exclusions also apply if the horse has to be euthanised on animal-welfare grounds.
| Rule | According to Folksam riding horse |
|---|---|
| Fixed excess | 3 500, 5 000 or 7 000 kr |
| Percentage excess | 25 % of the remaining cost |
| Excess period | 150 days from the first payable cost – the fixed excess is paid once per period |
| Excess on life | None |
| Waiting period | 20 days on a new policy if the horse has not been insured before |
| No waiting period | Accident through sudden external trauma; direct transfer from another insurer/another policyholder |
| Age at taking out (riding horse) | From birth up to and including 17 years |
| Broodmare (breeding) | From the year the mare turns 3 up to and including the year she turns 20 |
Example from Folksam: with several colic visits within 150 days you pay the fixed excess only once, and the percentage part on the costs. If you have Ridhäst Stor with A1 80 000 kr there is also extra room for abdominal surgery up to 50 000 kr once the veterinary sum is used up.
Folksam suits you if you want a clear package choice (Bas/Stor), three concrete veterinary sums and the ability to steer the scope via A1/A6 and A1/A2 life. Ridhäst Stor with A1 is the set-up that gives the most complete cover in Folksam’s riding-horse line – including rehab, medication, therapeutic shoeing and extra abdominal surgery.
On a transfer from another insurer with equivalent cover, the waiting period can fall away according to Folksam. Apply and get a decision first – do not cancel the old policy until the new one starts the same day. If you need to cut the premium: switch A1→A6 or Stor→Bas only if you truly understand what drops out. Never create a break in cover.
Both can have the same veterinary sums (40/80/125 000 kr) and you choose A1 or A6. Stor adds extended cover (including rehab, medication, therapeutic shoeing, vet travel, animal ambulance) and extra payout for abdominal surgery up to 50 000 kr once the maximum has been reached.
A1 is the more comprehensive veterinary cover for illness and accident. A6 covers many common injuries and illnesses but not, for example, lameness and wear-and-tear injuries – see the diagnosis list in the wording.
A1 is the broader life cover and can also pay on loss of use (sometimes a partial payout). A2 is limited life cover with several exclusions, including lameness and certain tendon/ligament/respiratory problems.
A fixed excess of 3 500, 5 000 or 7 000 kronor plus 25 % variable. The fixed excess is paid once per 150-day period. Life cover has no excess.
